New Works, Jean-Baptiste Besançon
Artist Statement: For me, painting is a language that evolves. I allow myself to be as free as possible and avoid committing to any single path.
I deliberately leave room for the unknown in order to get as close to life as possible. But total freedom is like infinity: you can only strive towards it, but never reach it completely. It's this tension, this floating uncertainty, that drives my work.
In my most recent paintings, I detached myself from anything that might be considered aesthetic or organised, in order to produce work that is truer, fairer and freer of particular gestural or behavioural habits that often arise when faced with a blank canvas.
Everything changes, evolves, disappears, transforms and adapts; I don't believe in the linearity of painting.
