Artist Statement

“The more darkness you can gather up, the more light you can see too.”

The landscapes I paint often point towards the internal terrain of my emotions and thoughts. While exploring these scenes, I find myself increasingly affected by the changing ideological topographies happening across the world. NIGHT & DAY is a collection of works that shares my interior world during this moment in time. In such, the works express a multitude of perspectives, from joy and camaraderie, to loss and sorrow.

While creating these paintings, I contemplated the monumental passing of David Lynch, and his profound understanding that in order to appreciate the light, you have to acquaint yourself with darkness—a resonant consideration in light of the destructive wildfires here in Los Angeles. My hope is that the moodier scenes imagined in this body of work offer the knowing that serenity can also be found in darkness if you look for it.
